Bangladesh has successfully secured an additional three years before officially graduating from the United Nations' least developed country (LDC) category. This extension offers significant relief to garment exporters, pharmaceutical manufacturers, and major business associations that had been advocating for more time to prepare.
Despite the relief, experts and business leaders note that the postponement does not address the underlying economic challenges. Persistent issues such as energy shortages, banking sector vulnerabilities, limited access to finance, and an over-dependence on the garment industry remain critical concerns. Economists are now urging the government to implement a clear roadmap and comprehensive economic reforms to ensure the country is adequately prepared for the inevitable graduation in 2029.
